چکیده

Genomes of the month Four new genomes will be discussed in this month’s Genome Update. The list of organisms given in Table 1 includes an archaeon, two bacteria and an eukaryote. Two genomes will only be mentioned briefly. The protozoan Cryptosporidium hominis causes gastroenteritis and diarrhoea around the world. Like the Cryptosporidium parvum genome (Abrahamsen et al., 2004), that of C. hominis has undergone genome reduction to a size of about 9 Mbp, and both genomes have slightly fewer than 4000 genes (Xu et al., 2004). Photobacterium profundum is a member of the vibrio group (Thompson et al., 2004), and its genome consists of two chromosomes and one plasmid (Table 1). At the time of writing, the GenBank files have been deposited, but the genome report has not yet been published. One very interesting feature of this genome is the larger number of rRNAs.

I-3: Human Y Chromosome Proteome Project 2012 Update

The Human Genome Project has generated a blueprint for the approximately 20,300 gene-encoded proteins potentially active in any of 230 cell types that make up the human body (human proteome). However, based on the UniProtKB/Swiss-Prot database content, about 6000 of at the protein level; for many others, there is very little information related to protein function, abundance, subcellular locali...

I-49: Human Y Chromosome ProteomeProject

The success of the Human Genome Project (HGP) has provided a blueprint for the approximately 20,000 gene-encoded proteins potentially active in all of the hundreds of cell types that make up the human body. Yet we still have limited knowledge about a majority of the gene-encoded proteins which are the “building blocks of life” and “cellular machinery”. It is estimated that for nearly half of th...

Yeast genome evolution in the post-genome era.

The Saccharomyces cerevisiae genome sequence, augmented by new data on gene expression and function, continues to yield new findings about eukaryote genome evolution. Analysis of the duplicate gene pairs formed by whole-genome duplication indicates that selection for increased levels of gene expression was a significant factor determining which genes were retained as duplicates and which were r...

Interactive InterPro-based comparisons of proteins in whole genomes

MOTIVATION The SWISS-PROT group at the EBI has developed the Proteome Analysis Database utilizing existing resources and providing comprehensive and integrated comparative analysis of the predicted protein coding sequences of the complete genomes of bacteria, archaea and eukaryotes. The Proteome Analysis Database is accompanied by a program that has been designed to carry out interactive InterP...

Arabidopsis leaf plasma membrane proteome using a gel free method: Focus on receptor–like kinases

The hydrophobic proteins of plant plasma membrane still remain largely unknown.  For example in the Arabidopsis genome, receptor-like kinases (RLKs) are plasma membrane proteins, functioning as the primary receptors in the signaling of stress conditions, hormones and the presence of pathogens form a diverse family of over 610 genes. A limited number of these proteins have appeard in pr...
